Big Data and Sustainable Development: Paving the way towards sustainable future

Estonian Roundtable for Development Cooperation is inviting you to a seminar “Big Data and Sustainable Development: Paving the way towards sustainable future” taking place on the 6th of April 2018 in Tallinn Creative Hub.

In the seminar:

  1. We bring examples from the world how data has contributed to social good.
  2. We discuss whether big data hands new opportunities and wider perspectives to civil society working in the field of sustainable development.
  3. We offer masterclasses where CSOs can find answers to problems related to sustainable development and learn how to better communicate and visualize data connected with their field of work.

Agenda

12.30 – 13.45 Keynote panel: “Data is here to stay – how to use it for social good?”

Data revolution and role of technology has a rising importance in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals  by the year 2030. Big data is one of those drivers to help measure timeliness as well as relevance in reaching them. The United Nations has brought out examples how big data can indicate  support for political institutions (SDG16) or how people express their thoughts about climate change (SDG13) via social media, mobile payments indicate changes in income (SDG1), satellite data is used to forecast yields (SDG 2) and how water resources are planned through information stored on clouds (SDG 6) and many more. The keynote panel aims to map how big data is contributing to humanitarian and development causes. We bring concrete examples how mobile data usage can fight against the outbreaks of tuberculosis in India. Can using data in journalism bring it to next level and provide us with more informative and facts based understanding of local as well as global issues?

Speakers:

  • Bruno Lepri, Mobile and Social Computing Lab – “Big data: What is it and how to use it for humanitarian and development causes”
  • Siim Esko, Positium – “Big Data for Social Good: Mobile Phone Data”
  • Teemo Tebest, YLE – “How to make a successful data story?”

The keynote panel is followed by a short Q & A session.

14.00 – 15.15 Panel discussion: “Using big data – new playground for civil society?

State, private sector and civil society has differing views on how to deal with the challenges and opportunities that big data presents. To understand how the sectors could cooperate on data exchange and collaborate on finding answers to questions about sustainable development via data we ask: How good are we at using big data for sustainable development? Can we do it in Estonia? Where to look for examples? Is there room for civil society in this new playground?

Panel:

  • Kirke Saar, Telia
  • Andres Kukke, Statistics Estonia
  • Joonatan Samuel, Datamob
  • Dagmar Bosanška, Futuristiq

Moderated by: Sten Andreas Ehrlich, SpeakSmart

15.45 – 17.30 Masterclass: “Big data = big question. How can civil society pitch in and start using big data for sustainable development”

The masterclass workstreams:

  1. SDGs and mobile phone data” by Positium. Lead by Siim Esko (Positium)
  2. “Datajournalism: Visualising SDG 11”. Lead by Maarja-Leena Saar (Estonian Cooperation Assembly) and Keegan McBride (Tallinn University of Technology)
